1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Why Join 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?

The Santa Clarita Public Library encourages families to read 1,000 books with their children before they enter kindergarten in order to increase school success and help develop a lifelong love of learning. This challenge is promoted by schools and libraries across the nation. The Global Family Research Project presents data that defines Seven Research-Based Ways Families Promote Early Literacy:

  • Families create literacy-friendly home environments.
  • Families have ongoing and engaging conversations with their children.
  • Families hold high expectations for their children’s learning.
  • Families make reading enjoyable.
  • Families use their home language.
  • Families communicate with their children’s teachers.
  • Families visit the Library.

How to get started!

If you read just three books a day, you will reach your goal within one year. Even if you read just one book per day, you will reach the goal of 1,000 books in three years. It’s not only about the books though, early literacy is developed through reading, writing, singing, talking and playing. The Santa Clarita Public Library supports this important endeavor by offering a way for families to:

  • Log books read in the Beanstack app.  First time? Watch our tutorial.
  • Download a calendar for at-home literacy activities.
  • Attend Library events that support early literacy.
  • Motivate your child through rewards and recognition.

Rewards and Recognitions

The joy of reading and engaging in early literacy activities is rewarding for the whole family. It is also important to recognize children’s progress as they develop their reading skills. As you log your reading in Beanstack, you will be notified when you have hit milestones such as your first ten, 20, 100 and 500 books. For every 100 books read, you will be prompted in the Beanstack app to stop by the Library to receive a small reward from our treasure box. There will also be opportunities to snap a photo of your reader at the Library to mark their progress!
