Paper Hearts Book Review: Unmasked by the Marquess

This month we discussed¬†Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian. This is the story of Charity Church, a former housemaid masquerading as her deceased- and male- employer in order to act as his younger sister’s guardian. Charity- or Robert Selby- enjoys the freedoms that come with being a man even though she knows her role is temporary.¬† The problem is, serious sparks begin to fly with her acquaintance Alistair, Marquess of Pembroke. Charity hates lying about her identity when love is on the line, but needs the charade to last a little longer which is difficult with such intense chemistry. There are a few road blocks along the way, a nefarious relative, and a lot of very spicy scenes.

The group felt that there were a few good points to the book- personally, as a teen who grew up loving Shakespeare’s comedies, I always enjoy a good trousers role. Ultimately, however it seemed that this book fell a little short of what it was trying to do- it is difficult to tackle bisexuality and gender-fluid characters in a Regency piece with a HEA (Happily Ever After) since social acceptance would never have been the norm. This book decided to tell the readers that it was fine, everything would be all right. It didn’t, however, convince us that it actually would be. The ending was also very rushed and a little bizarre. The other major commentary was that there was a little too much fascination with Robert/Charity’s character being in need of a haircut. It came up a lot. As always, very lively discussion was had, and if you enjoy commentary on books, we’d love to have you come!

Thanks for attending our book club review! Our next book is Beauchamp Hall by Danielle Steel- because… what’s a romance book club that doesn’t tackle Danielle Steel at least once? Join us on Zoom on Wednesday, July 21st at 5:30 pm. Registration information available on our calendar.
