Paper Hearts Book Review: An Extraordinary Union

At our May meeting of Paper Hearts, we discussed An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole. Unlike last month’s book, this one included some “spicy” sections- quite a few of them. The plot follows Elle, a free black woman during the Civil War with an eidetic memory who poses as a slave in order to spy on the household of an important confederate family. What she didn’t anticipate was that she’d meet a fellow spy and sparks would fly. The attraction between the two characters is excellent and the tension is pretty good. We had many mixed feelings in the group, however, as their budding relationship actually endangered the mission several times. End vote- mostly appreciated the spice, thought the spy-craft needed some work. Thankfully, mixed feelings lead to fun discussions and we had a blast.

For June, we will be meeting on Monday, June 21st at 6pm on Zoom and discussing Cat Sebastian’s Unmasked by the Marquess. If you’d like to join us, register on the link in our calendar at
